RED ALARM WORDS!

In Readers' Workshop, we read The Wretched Stone by Chris Van Allsburg.  We summarized the plot using "Somebody Wanted But So Then". Tomorrow, we'll look at both texts by Van Allsburg, The Polar Express and The Wretched Stone, to compare to develop insights.

In Writers' Workshop, I've noticed lately that although students have very thoughtful ideas in their essays, they're struggling with control and autonomy regarding ending punctuation. Today, I taught students that when they see certain words (RED ALARM words), their brains should make that alarm sound; red alarm words signal writers to ask "Should I put a period here?". Essentially these words help writers edit run-on sentences.

In Math Workshop, we're working on multi-step multiplication and division problems.  Today, students learned how to attack a real-world problem, step-by-step, to help the solve.

In Social Studies, we're learning how taxes help our community and what they pay for within our community, state, and federal government.
