B1G!

Hi All,

This year, my end of the year gift to students came a little early-- today! I wanted every student here the day I gave them their little gift, and with Memorial Day weekend, planned vacations, etc., we've been hard-pressed to have a day with everyone here.  Today was the first day with full attendance, so it was as good as any to share with students (and you) what I've been up to...

This year, my goal for students was to leave third grade knowing about college, knowing they could go to any college they wanted (with hard work), and knowing I believed in them.  I wrote an open-letter to the Big Ten, hoping to get donations that would allow me to purchase shirts for all the kids.  What happened next surprised me.  People from back home (Farmington, MI) and alumni from all over donated. As a result of others' generosity, I was able to purchase not only shirts, but also little backpacks.  Mrs. Mars was able to capture some moments so I could share with you on the blog.

Mystery Powders

In Science, students observed physical properties of "mystery powders"  (they're all non-toxic, basic kitchen supplies).  They studied and noted particle color, texture, size and shape to gather information and make a hypothesis about the names of these powders.

Review Due Friday

In Writers' Workshop, students used their notes from yesterday and sentence starters to write paragraphs within a given text structure, about their topic.

In Readers' Workshop, students worked in partnerships to consider problem and solution when growing ideas about theme in "Spaghetti".

In Math Workshop, students used formulas for perimeter and area to find unknowns.  We also practiced solving word problems and writing their corresponding equations, and rounding to the nearest ten to make reasonable estimates.

In Science, students studied hypothetical scenarios to explore safety practices in science investigations.

Math Test Friday

This week in Readers' Workshop, students are taking on more of the responsibility regarding reading and comparing settings, plots, and themes of two different texts, written by the same author.  They're reading two short stories, "Spaghetti" and "Boar Out There", both by Cynthia Rylant.

In Writers' Workshop, students explored different text structures to see how they affected the thinking and writing they're planning on their informational topic.

In Math Workshop, we "made it rain bingo chips..."  We used manipulatives to model and identify the operation being used in word problems.  Then we wrote the matching expression.  Students also rounded to the nearest ten to make reasonable estimates.  At stations, students worked in First In Math and played "Beach Ball Multiplication" to practice solving multi-digit multiplication equations using the matrix and partial products.

In Science, students used their data from our absorbency experiment to defend their claim about which paper towel is the most absorbent.
